Expression of Interest for job vacancy within the Department of Judiciary

The Republic of Nauru is seeking expressions of interest from judicial officers or Judges who wish to be considered for appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Nauru.
The President of the Republic of Nauru appoints Judges of the Supreme Court by virtue of Article 49(2) of the Constitution.

A person is ordinarily qualified for appointment as Chief Justice or as a Judge if the person:
Holds or has held a judicial office in a Commonwealth country (either at state or federal level; or

Is a lawyer of at least 12 years’ standing

Selection Criteria and Professional attributes
The following attributes are considered as essential for the position:
Prior experience as a Judge of a superior court and a minimum of 12 or more years of legal practice in a common law jurisdiction
Demonstrated proficiency in the law and its underlying principles
High level of professional experience and expertise and ability in the area(s) of professional specialization
Applied experience (through the practice of law or other branches of legal practice)
Excellent intellectual and analytical ability
Demonstrated track record and experience as a Judge who has experience in civil, criminal law and or family law
The following attributes are considered as desirable for the position:
Demonstrated experience as a sitting Judge, Justice in a common law jurisdiction
Capable of making fair, balanced and consistent decisions according to law without delay
Experience or ability to work in a small, developing country
Experience or ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
Ability to discharge duties promptly
Capacity to work under pressure with limited resources
Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with peers and members of the public
Ability to clearly explain procedure and decisions to all parties
Effective management of workload
Committed to promoting proper judicial administration and leading continuous improvement in court policy and practice with judicial colleagues
Ability to maintain authority and inspire respect
Willingness to participate in ongoing judicial education
Ability to use, or willingness to learn modern information technology
Personal qualities
Independence, discretion and impartiality
Good character
Common sense and good judgment
Courtesy and patience
Social awareness
Cultural sensitivity and tolerance
